Virginia Housing has launched a powerful new resource for the people who keep our communities running: the Community Heroes Grant — a $10,000 grant, not a loan — designed to help community heroes transition from renting to owning.

What Is the Community Heroes Grant?

The Community Heroes Grant is a $10,000 grant from Virginia Housing to help eligible buyers with the upfront costs of purchasing a home.

  • ✅ $10,000 grant — not a loan

  • ✅ No repayment required

  • ✅ Available statewide in Virginia

  • ✅ Can be layered with other Virginia Housing programs

  • ✅ Available starting December 11, 2025

Who the Grant Is Designed For

This grant is designed for service-focused professionals across Virginia, including (but not limited to):

  • Teachers and education professionals

  • Public safety workers

  • First responders (police, fire, EMS)

  • Military (active duty, veterans, retirees)

  • Healthcare workers

  • 911 dispatchers

  • School bus drivers

  • Custodial and maintenance staff

Retirees from these professions may also qualify.

If you serve the community in a support, safety, education, or care role, there is a strong chance this program was built with you in mind.

Layer This Grant With Other Virginia Housing Programs

One of the biggest advantages of the Community Heroes Grant is that it can be layered with other Virginia Housing benefits to maximize your savings.

Eligible buyers may be able to combine the $10,000 grant with:

  • Down Payment Assistance (DPA)

  • Closing Cost Assistance (CCA)

  • PLUS Loans

  • FirstHome Dream

  • SPARC rate-reduction programs

Used together, these tools can dramatically reduce the cash needed to close and make homeownership more accessible for the people who give so much to others.
